Case Study: 5-Star Hotel Entrance Renovation in London — Heritage Aesthetics with Modern Security

Table of Contents

Project Overview

Location: Mayfair, London, UK
Building type: 5-star boutique hotel (Grade II listed heritage building)
Client: International hotel group
Specification requirement: Period-appropriate aesthetics, RC3 security, EI 30 fire rating, acoustic performance Rw ≥ 42 dB

The Challenge: Heritage Planning Constraints

The 1890s Mayfair townhouse required all external architectural modifications to receive planning permission from Westminster City Council’s heritage team. The original entrance doors—solid mahogany with period brass hardware—could not be replicated in modern materials without explicit consent demonstrating like-for-like visual match.

The hotel’s security consultant simultaneously required RC3 burglar resistance and EI 30 fire rating for the main entrance, specifications impossible to achieve with historically authentic solid mahogany at the required thickness within the existing frame opening.

KINGSHIELD’s Heritage-Compatible Solution

Working with the hotel’s interior designer and heritage planning consultant, KINGSHIELD developed a steel-core composite door with:

  • External skin: 2.5mm book-matched African mahogany veneer over steel substrate, with period panel mouldings routed to exactly match original photographs
  • Internal steel core: Enabling RC3 certification and EI 30 fire rating within 84mm total leaf thickness
  • Hardware: Antique polished brass multi-point locking with traditional lever handle profile—concealing contemporary security specification
  • Glazing: Slim double-glazed unit in period astragal-divided frame, laminated security glass
  • Threshold: Flush aluminum threshold with concealed multi-point floor lock engagement

Planning Approval Process

KINGSHIELD provided full technical drawings, material samples, and finish samples to support the heritage planning application. Approval was granted in 6 weeks—unusually fast for Westminster—partly due to the thoroughness of the submitted documentation demonstrating authentic visual replication.

Result

The installed doors are visually indistinguishable from the original 1890s mahogany entrance in all heritage review photography. The hotel management reports that no guest has identified the doors as anything other than original period timber—the highest possible compliment for a heritage-sensitive installation.
