NFRC Certification Explained for US Buyers: What It Means and Why It Matters
If you buy windows for a US project, you will run into the term “NFRC certified.” It affects energy code compliance, tax credits, and how much you can trust a supplier’s performance claims. This guide explains what NFRC certification is, how to read the label, and how to verify it.
What Is the NFRC?
The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) is a non-profit organization that provides uniform, independent ratings for the energy performance of windows, doors and skylights in the United States.
NFRC does not make windows. It establishes the rating methods and certifies products so that buyers can compare performance on an equal basis.
Why NFRC Certification Matters
- Energy code compliance – US energy codes (and programs like ENERGY STAR) reference NFRC ratings. Without them, your project may not pass.
- Tax credits and rebates – Federal and utility incentive programs require NFRC-rated performance.
- Apples-to-apples comparison – Ratings let you compare windows objectively instead of relying on marketing claims.
- Specification support – Architects and engineers specify NFRC values in project documents.
How to Read the NFRC Label
An NFRC label reports four ratings:
| Rating | What it means | Lower or higher is better? |
|---|---|---|
| U-Factor | Heat loss rate | Lower is better |
| SHGC | Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (heat from sunlight) | Depends on climate |
| VT | Visible Transmittance (daylight) | Higher = more light |
| AL | Air Leakage | Lower is better |
Example values for a good thermal break window:
U-Factor: 0.25 - 0.30
SHGC: 0.25 - 0.40
VT: 0.40 - 0.60
AL: <= 0.3
How a Product Becomes NFRC Certified
- Simulation – Software models the product’s performance.
- Testing – Physical testing at an accredited lab validates the simulation.
- Certification – An NFRC-approved Certification Program issues and licenses the rating.
- Labeling – The manufacturer applies the NFRC label to each unit.
- Ongoing monitoring – Products are periodically re-verified.
A product is only “NFRC certified” if it appears in the NFRC Certified Products Directory (CPD).
How to Verify an NFRC Claim
This is the step many buyers skip, and it is the most important one:
- Go to the NFRC Certified Products Directory.
- Search by manufacturer name or product line.
- Confirm the product, the ratings, and the validity date.
If a supplier claims NFRC certification but the product is not in the CPD, treat the claim with caution.
Can Imported Windows Be NFRC Certified?
Yes. Many overseas manufacturers hold NFRC certifications for their product lines. When sourcing, ask for:
- The NFRC product line and model
- The certified U-factor, SHGC, VT and AL values
- The CPD listing reference
- The license or label documentation
A manufacturer experienced with US projects will provide these without hesitation.
NFRC vs Other Certifications
| Certification | Scope | Region |
|---|---|---|
| NFRC | Energy performance rating | US |
| AAMA/WDMA | Product performance and quality | North America |
| CE (EN 14351-1) | European product standard | Europe |
| Florida Product Approval | Wind and impact (state) | Florida, US |
These are complementary. A US project may require NFRC plus AAMA and, in Florida, a state approval.
FAQ
Is NFRC certification mandatory? It is not mandatory everywhere, but it is required to demonstrate compliance with most US energy codes and incentive programs. Many projects effectively require it.
What U-factor do I need? It depends on your climate zone and the applicable code. Colder zones (northern US) require lower U-factors. Confirm the target with your code official or specifier.
Does NFRC certify the frame or the whole window? NFRC rates the complete fenestration product (frame, glass, spacer and hardware as assembled), not the frame alone.
How long does NFRC certification take? Several weeks to a few months, depending on simulation, testing and program timelines.
Can I trust a supplier’s NFRC claim without documents? No. Always verify through the NFRC Certified Products Directory and request the label documentation.
Sourcing NFRC-Compliant Windows
For US projects, look for a supplier whose products carry valid NFRC ratings and appear in the CPD, along with AAMA/WDMA certification where required.
KINGSHIELD supplies custom aluminum window and door systems for US, Canadian and European projects. Our manufacturing partners hold CE, NFRC and AAMA/WDMA certifications, and full documentation is provided with every order. Request a project quote ->
