Why Thermal Performance Is a Luxury Feature, Not Just a Technical Requirement
A luxury entrance door that allows heat to bleed through in winter, creates condensation on the interior face, or permits cold drafts is a luxury door that fails. Thermal performance is no longer a box to check for building code compliance—it’s a comfort and quality specification that discerning buyers and architects demand by default.
Understanding the U-Value (Thermal Transmittance)
The U-value (measured in W/m²K) describes how much heat passes through one square meter of a building element for every degree of temperature difference between inside and outside. Lower is better.

How Manufacturers Achieve Low U-Values
Three design elements primarily determine a door’s thermal performance:
- Thermal break in the frame – Polyamide profiles that interrupt the steel thermal bridge
- Insulation infill – Polyurethane foam (λ ≈ 0.022 W/mK) or mineral wool (λ ≈ 0.035 W/mK)
- Multi-seal perimeter system – Brush seals, foam seals, and compression seals working in combination to eliminate air infiltration
Energy Codes by Region
North America (IECC 2021): Maximum door U-value varies by climate zone, ranging from 0.17 BTU/hr·ft²·°F (≈ 0.97 W/m²K) in Zone 7 to 0.35 BTU/hr·ft²·°F (≈ 1.99 W/m²K) in Zone 1.
Europe (EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive): Member states set national requirements, typically in the range of Ud ≤ 1.0–1.6 W/m²K for entrance doors in new residential construction.
